Most NEET aspirants revise in NCERT order: chapter 1, then chapter 2, then chapter 3. The exam does not ask questions in NCERT order, and it does not ask them in equal proportion.
We tagged every question from 13 years of NEET papers (2013–2025) against its NCERT chapter — 3,946 questions in all. The distribution is far more lopsided than most students assume.
The headline: ten chapters per subject carry roughly half the paper
Across the 13-year window:
- Physics — 1,052 questions across 28 chapters. The top 10 chapters account for 49.6% of them.
- Chemistry — 939 questions across 22 chapters. The top 10 account for 58.7%.
- Biology — 1,955 questions across 32 chapters. The top 10 account for 46.3%.
Chemistry is the most concentrated subject in the paper. If you are short on time, ten Chemistry chapters return more marks per hour than anything else on your syllabus.
That is not permission to skip the rest. It is an argument about order: the heavy chapters deserve your first pass, your best hours, and your most recent revision — not whatever attention is left in March.
Physics: the ten chapters that decide your score
Ranked by questions asked, 2013–2025:
- Current Electricity (Class 12) — 66
- Ray Optics and Optical Instruments (Class 12) — 59
- System of Particles and Rotational Motion (Class 11) — 56
- Semiconductor Electronics (Class 12) — 55
- Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance (Class 12) — 49
- Moving Charges and Magnetism (Class 12) — 49
- Laws of Motion (Class 11) — 49
- Work, Energy and Power (Class 11) — 48
- Gravitation (Class 11) — 46
- Units and Measurements (Class 11) — 45
Two things stand out. Electricity and magnetism together — Current Electricity, Electrostatic Potential, Moving Charges — contribute more than any other cluster in Physics. And Units and Measurements, the chapter almost everyone treats as a warm-up before the "real" syllabus starts, has been asked 45 times. It is a top-10 chapter that students routinely finish in an afternoon and never revisit.
Chemistry: concentration is the whole story

Six of these ten are Class 11 chapters. The common aspirant strategy — finish Class 12 thoroughly because it is "current", revise Class 11 later — is backwards for Chemistry. Some Basic Principles and Techniques in particular is load-bearing: it is worth 56 questions on its own, and the reasoning it teaches (inductive effects, resonance, stability ordering) is what makes the 56 questions in Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids tractable.
Biology: where the marks actually live

Biology is worth half the paper — 360 of 720 marks — so these numbers carry the most weight in absolute terms. Molecular Basis of Inheritance alone has been asked 131 times in 13 years, roughly ten questions per paper. Genetics as a block — Molecular Basis plus Principles of Inheritance plus Biotechnology — is 338 questions. No other cluster in any subject comes close.
How to actually use a weightage table
Weightage lists get shared constantly and used badly. Three rules that make the difference:
Sequence by weight, not by chapter number. Your first full pass should hit the top 10 of each subject before it touches anything else. Everything after that is refinement.
Do not confuse "high weightage" with "easy marks". Frequently asked is not the same as frequently answered correctly. Rotational Motion is a top-3 Physics chapter and one of the lowest-accuracy chapters in the paper. High weightage tells you where to spend time; it does not promise the time will be comfortable.
Never skip a chapter because it is at the bottom. The floor across all three subjects is still one to two questions per paper. In an exam where a single mark can move you thousands of ranks, a deliberately blank chapter is an expensive decision.
Weightage is a starting point, not a study plan
A ranked list tells you where the questions come from. It cannot tell you which of those chapters you are weak in — and that is the number that actually determines your score.
